Scope Statement:
Briefing & Visualization for Intel (BVI) is a rigorous 3-day course designed for intelligence professionals, analysts, data translators, and technical communicators who must create and deliver clear, concise, accurate, and decision-ready intelligence briefings.
The course develops the skills needed to frame, structure, visualize, refine, and deliver an intelligence brief. Learners examine purpose and audience, briefing structure, visual aids, slide craft, content prioritization, briefing essentials, and delivery techniques.
Through hands-on exercises, examples, and practical application, learners practice transforming information and analysis into effective briefing products that communicate key messages clearly and support informed decision-making.
Training culminates in a Capstone Exercise, where learners prepare and deliver a complete intelligence brief, demonstrating their ability to structure information, apply appropriate visual and slide design, prioritize content, and communicate the finished brief effectively.
During this course, you will gain the skills to:
Understand Purpose & Audience
Identify the purpose of a briefing, understand audience needs, and determine what the audience needs to know.
Structure an Intelligence Brief
Organize information into a clear, logical structure and use BLUF and content prioritization to communicate the essential message.
Use Visual Aids Effectively
Select and apply charts, diagrams, and other visual aids that improve understanding and communicate information clearly, including appropriate representation of uncertainty.
Craft Clear, Focused Slides
Apply slide layout, visual hierarchy, consistency, spacing, and content discipline to create slides that support the brief without overwhelming the audience.
Refine Briefing Content
Identify what must be included, remove unnecessary information, and focus the brief on information that supports its purpose and audience.
Deliver the Brief Effectively
Use the prepared brief and visual materials to communicate clearly, guide the audience, and deliver information with effective speaking and presentation techniques.
Manage Questions & Discussion
Respond to questions and engage in discussion while maintaining clarity, focus, and control of the briefing.
Apply Briefing Skills in Practice
Integrate the skills developed throughout the course to prepare and deliver a complete intelligence briefing in the capstone exercise.
Course Format:
The course follows a sequential, practice-centered format that moves learners from framing the brief to building, refining, and delivering it.
